Revealing Differences Between Websites And Blogs
Written by Andre on April 29, 2010 – 4:41 PM -A lot of people are becoming aware that blogs are sites where a person can put a shared journal or in some cases businesses can even promote their website. This in turn has generated a lot of questions about just how blogs work and are used and how they differ from a website. Normally there are 4 differences that are noted that can make a blog different from a website.
1. Posts – It is usually said that post are the core function of any blog. They are like the building blocks of the blog and they are what holds the blog together. Usually posting done on the blogs are done by the blog owner and can include a variety of different topics. And another big difference between the blog and the website is the blog will normally have their post in chronological order but with a website you don’t really have to post. Once you upload it with information, it is just a standard site where someone might go to get some information on a certain product or idea.
2. Comments – On a blog visitors are usually able to leave comments, if the owner will allow it, about each post. That can be another great way for the owner of the blog to communicate with the readers of the blog. That comment section of your blog will also help to drive traffic to your site. That is also additional content which is considered good by the search engines. Consider the comment section a very important part of any blog. With a website you are not likely to have a comment section.
3. Categories – Blog owners use the category section of their blog to organize the information from the posts or posted content. It will help to keep that blog looking nice, neat and well formatted. It will also keep your blog from looking to overloaded. As your blog continues to grow those categories can be organized by the month or even the topic. You can usually find a search feature to assist the reader with finding information on a certain subject really fast. And the blog will have software to automatically place the posts into various categories.
4. Subscriptions – Subscriptions are another very important part of a blog when you learn how a blog works. This feature will allow your readers to become members of the blog and once they do become a member they can be notified when new information has been added to the blog. Just one more great point on why you should create a blog because you can then create an online community for a specific subject. You will even see some blogs now that have a newsletter like feature which can allow a person to read your information without having to sign into the site.
It is quite evident that there are some big differences between that blog and a website. As you come to understand more of those differences you will hopefully understand blogs and blogging a bit more. A blog can be used as a communication tool and can be a fun and exciting way to meet new people while you are sharing your ideas, if they are used the right way.
A really good friend of mine, Mike Paetzold, The WordPress Guy, is a great teacher about blogs. If you would like to learn a bit more about blogs and blogging I would definitely recommend him as a great teacher who will have you up and running a blog in no time.
And yes, with Mike’s product I am an affiliate but that should not stop you from going and learning from an expert. it will shorten your learning curve and you will be taught the right way to do it.

Appreciate the props Andre and yes there are quite a few advantages to having a blog over a website. The only advantage static html seems to have is speed.

You’re right, those are some of the main differences between normal sites and blogs. However, with the internet going more social, a lot of what was once a blog is now coming over to be a part of “normal” web sites.
A lot of sites now have some kind of comment/community aspect to it, along with subscriptions.

I like blogs because I find them easier to add content to and I also like the social aspect through commenting. Even sales pages and squeeze pages are now being created with blogs.
