List Building Techniques That Work
Written by Andre on August 3, 2010 – 6:29 PM -Your mailing list is your market but building up a good list takes time, something which is a problem for new internet businesses that need to start selling fast to generate an income. You can buy mailing lists, but these rarely work – many of the email addresses may not be valid and out of the thousand names on these lists, a large majority will be those who have no interest in what you are selling. There are some list building techniques you can use to speed up the process and the first of them is Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
Optimizing your website means that it shows up high in search results and thus increases the amount of visitors you will have. But getting visitors is not getting business – that will come later after you start sending them sales emails based on the email addresses they leave with you in return for a free download that they will get in return for their addresses. The most popular of the freebies you can offer is an ebook about what you have to sell – those who opt for it are those who are interested in your line of business and are the best target market for you.
President Obama used a splash page on his website during his campaign and this gave him a huge number of email addresses he used to send out his campaign messages. A splash page is simple a greeting page with a catchy headline where people who want to learn more about the product in general (not your specific business – it is too early for that) can leave their email addresses. You can use these address for a general newsletter as well as for specific emails about what you are selling.
Do not overlook the potential of offline list building techniques. Get email addresses of friends and business contacts for your circle of relatives and friends and email these people giving the reference of whom you got their address from. This will establish a common connection and make to person receiving the mail more amenable to reading it since someone he knows thinks it will interest him.
Spend time learning other list building techniques but using these can provide you with a good start – but do not expect overnight results; there are no list building techniques that can offer that.

List Building Explained 101
Written by Andre on August 1, 2010 – 4:52 PM -The more you learn about internet marketing, the more you will find the importance of list building being emphasized. But it is when you try to understand what list building is that you face problems, it is so seemingly simple that there are few efforts made to have list building explained.
If list building is to be explained, the best way to do it will be to describe a list as a database of people who would be interested in the goods or services you are selling and list building as the process of expanding your base of potential customers. Or, to put it simply, the list is your market and list building is expanding it.
The reason why people come to your site (how they come there is another subject) is because they find something there that interests them and they want to learn more. But the interest of a visitor does not automatically translate into a sale – as a matter of fact, the first contact almost never ends up with a sale.
To generate sales you will need to build up recall of your website by staying in the mind of those who form your market – you will need to keep reminding them that you have products that they will benefit from buying. The only way you can do this is by communicating with them on a regular basis and sending them information that will interest them and also details of why they need what you are selling
The key to online business success is building trust and the only way this can happen is to get your potential customers to know you and this is done by staying in communication with them in other words, using your list. The basis of all this communication is your list of email addresses and that is the market you will be selling to.
Many rookies to ecommerce mistakenly think that when it comes to lists, size is all that matters. Size is not everything and having a list of 10,000 people living in India is not going to help you to sell a book about “Dating In America.” A good list is one where there can be a good conversion rate, not one that is simply full of email addresses – a conversion rate of 20% with a focused list of 1,000 addresses will be far more profitable than a list of 10,000 that results in a conversion rate of just 1%.

List Building Secrets 101
Written by Andre on July 30, 2010 – 5:26 PM -The internet is full of websites and ezines articles offering to tell you all the list building secrets you need to know but most of these “secrets” are useless, many relate to specific lines of business only and only the remaining few may be of some use to you. To help you get going here are some list building secrets that can be the foundation of more advanced techniques you will pick up as you go along.
The first secret is to forget about gigantic lists – people will tell you about how to create lists with thousands of names but unless these names are those who are serious potential customers, what good are they to you? A list of 200 potential customers is worth much more than an unfocused list of thousands of names and for this reason its usually not worthwhile buying lists – they have no aim or focus and you don’t know how valid the email addresses are.
To build up your list, create a squeeze page that offers a free download related to your line of business to those who will leave their email addresses – people who do this are people who have an interest in your products. Once you have email addresses, make sure that you regularly send them quality content that addresses their interests so that they are constantly reminded that you exist and that they can buy from you because you are as reliable and your products are of the same high quality as your communications with them.
After people trust you, you can ask them for references of their friends and business associates and while few will reply, the names you do get are very valuable because, presumably, they will have the same interests as those who referred them and also because when you write to them citing a reference, a link and trust will be immediately created. Also, do not think that once you have email addresses you can stop there – ask people whom you are mailing regularly for more information about themselves to refine your marketing efforts; but be discrete and do not appear to be intrusive. You can do this by conducting surveys and opinion polls – but be careful never to seem to be nosy or intrusive as that will put people off.
You can pick up ideas on your competitors list building secrets by joining their mailing lists under another identity – why re-invent the wheel if they have list building ideas you can use? But keep mind that the most important of all list building secrets is not to worry about the size of your list but about how effective it is in getting you business.
