Trying To Understand How Search Engines Work

It is really easy to fall into the trap as a new online business owner of thinking that you have everything going for you when you have your website all set up on the Internet, so you can just sit back and watch the customers inquiries and orders start coming in.

You would be making a big mistake because if no one is aware that your website even exists or they are having a hard time just locating the site when they go searching for the type of product or service you sell, then you will have a tough time making money. You may have a very nice looking site but if potential customers have a hard time finding you then they can’t buy from you and your business will suffer and most likely fail.

You have to make sure you avoid that situation from happening, as soon as you get that website live (or even better, think about it as you are building your website), make sure the search engines can find your site.

When you are setting up your site, if Google, Bing (Microsoft’s current search engine) and Yahoo are not aware of your site or what kind of business you do, then it will be hard for them to get a link for your site to be included in the search results page.

If you want to be sure that the search engines will look for your website as you would want them, you may want to try these tips for that to happen.

First up, make sure you have those keyword phrases that will effectively identify your products and services. You could look at them as the words and phrases your potential customers might be typing into a search engine when seeking your products and services.

Next, after you have put together your keywords you will want to build some content pages on your website around those keywords you have come up with. Now, most of the search engines use computer programs called “spiders” or “robots” which will review millions of web pages every day. That way they can determine just what type of information those websites might contain. (Another term you may have heard for this is “crawling”. That information will be gathered at the central point or database for that search engine, where it will be categorized.

Those search engines each have a different way in determining which of the individual web pages are more relevant for that keyword phrase. And they all keep those exact algorithms secret and the “behind the scenes” talk is that they change from time to time. As all of these search engines are businesses themselves, they all want to provide the best service possible for their users.

By taking the proper step necessary to optimizing your website, these search engines will be able to drive massive amounts of targeted traffic to your website, especially if you can get your page near the top of one of the natural search results.

Also, the search engines show the results in order; so the web pages which appear to be more relevant and helpful to the key phrase will show near the top of the results list. You see, most of us tend to look at and click on the links near the top of the list first so, it is important for you to get you web pages properly indexed for the desired keyword and also get your web pages near the top of the results page. If you can get these things right you can expect to have long term success and profitability for your business.
